IT Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in

Information Technology stocks are likely to trade in a narrow band in an overall market that is likely to show a negative bias, ahead of Infosys’ third-quarter results. Infosys will report its results on Friday, we are looking for an upgrade in the company’s guidance for the full-year. The return of Mr. Murthy to Infosys has raised hopes on the medium-to-long term prospects of the company. Based on our expected revenues in 3Q, we expect the company to increase the guidance range. Though Oct-Dec is a traditionally weak quarter, the US market has been gaining strength in recent months, limiting the chances of an  underperformance by the IT sector.

Last quarter, Infosys reported numbers well above expectations, leading to a rally in IT stocks that fizzled out later as companies like Wipro and HCL Technologies failed to significantly outperform expectations. The market is likely to be more circumspect this quarter, even if Infosys reports better-than-expected numbers on Friday.

In addition, the Bangalore-based company also said it was dismantling its key decision making body in favour of a traditional pyramid-based approach to decision making, and on Friday appointed two new presidents to oversee its business.

IT companies will not get any help from rupee devaluation in the December quarter as the dollar-rupee rate has remained largely unchanged on quarter. The overall down sentiment in the market is likely to result in nervousness next week in IT stocks as well. In the week that passed, overall IT stocks held up even as the broader market slipped.

Telecom Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in

Telecom stocks are expected to trade in a narrow range next week with the Telecom Commission expected to meet Tuesday to decide on the contentious issue of spectrum usage charges. Telecom Commission, the highest decision making body in the telecom department, will have to decide on the spectrum usage charge that telecom companies will have to pay for the bandwidth acquired through the auction scheduled in February.

Telecom companies currently pay spectrum usage charge in the range of 2-8% on their adjusted gross revenue annually, depending on the amount of spectrum they hold, circles they operate in, among others. Incumbent telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular that pay about 7-8% as spectrum usage charges have demanded that the fee be levied at flat 3% as recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Sep 9. If the usage fee is levied at 3% then it is seen positive for the incumbent operators.

Oil Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in

Stocks of state-owned oil marketing companies are seen opening positive next week after they announced a hike in petrol and diesel prices after market hours yesterday but the trend for rest of the week will be determined by the rupee-dollar movement. The three companies–Indian Oil Corp Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd, and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd–raised petrol price by 75 paise per ltr and diesel prices by 50 paise per litre, contrary to reports suggesting that the companies will not make the move following the Congress party’s resounding defeat in the recent state assembly elections. Stocks of the three companies are expected to open with gains on Monday. However, the Indian currency has come under renewed pressure and fell below the 62-a-dollar mark this week. It hit a five-week low of 62.5450 during the day. Concerns still linger for these companies as that they are still losing 9.24 rupees per litre on sale of subsidised diesel.

There is continued volatility in the international oil prices because of geopolitical and economic developments around the globe, Indian Oil said in a release. Further hardening of crude prices or weakening of the rupee could weigh on these stocks next week. On the other hand, Reliance Industries stocks may stage a recovery next week after they closed yesterday at the lowest level in two weeks. Investors hose to ignore news that the company would add 1 mscmd of gas to output from the KG-D6 block. The company is likely to put to production a new well MA-8 in around a month. However, weak refining environment has added to investor concerns as the business accounts for almost 80% of the company’s revenues. Most market participants though expect the company’s stocks to recover from these levels.  In a note yesterday, the refining environment has started improving and reiterated its outperforming rating on the stock with a price target of 1,044 rupees.

Capital Goods Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

Capital Goods Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in

Stocks of most capital goods companies are likely to continue trading with a negative bias next week as profit booking is expected to continue in the absence of near term positives for the sector. The rally of capital goods stock in December was not sustainable as there are no key positives for the sector in the near term. Fundamental issues of sluggish industrial capex, low demand from power sector and weak capital formation in the economy need to improve for the sector to do well. Long-term investor may bet on stocks of capital goods companies, which have a robust order book and diversified exposure. However, the recent rally in stocks of the sector has pushed valuations to a peak, making it unprofitable for investors to enter the stocks.

Higher exposure to international orders, which traditionally offer lower margins as compared to domestic projects, higher debt and increasing working capital pressure are some of the negatives for stocks of L&T in the short term. With the power sector still waiting to see the actual impact of recent spate of reforms undertaken by the government, investors are also seen bearish on stocks of boiler turbine generator makers such as Siemens, ABB and Alstom, among others.

Auto Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

Auto Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in

Stocks of major automakers are likely to take cues from the ongoing stock-specific trends, including December sales numbers, for the first few days next week, and will trade later in anticipation of the quarterly results. There is no news flow this week (for the automakers). The trading will mostly be stock-specific, depending upon the anticipated numbers to be given by various brokerage firms. Companies will start declaring their financial results for the Oct-Dec quarter from mid-January. For the first few days it will take cues from the current trade scenario that is going on after the December sales number release. The auto companies this week announced their December sales figures, after which the trade has been stock-specific in the sector.

Most automakers performed poorly in December in terms of sales, with Maruti Suzuki India Ltd being an exception. Maruti Suzuki reported a growth of 5.5% on year to 86,613 units in domestic sales during the month of December. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd’s total automotive sales in December declined 13% from the year-ago period to 39,611 units. To be noted is the tractor sales of the company during the month, which rose 15% on year to 17,037 units, and once again outperformed the automotive division. Tata Motors Ltd sold a total 37,852 vehicles in December, down 42.3% on year, clearly below expectations. Its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover’s sales figures for December are expected to be announced next week, which will drive the stocks.

JLR has been the driving factor in the company’s sales and earnings on the back of which it has been performing decently. It is expected to register good numbers for December as well. Hero MotoCorp Ltd, India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer by sales, despatched 524,990 vehicles in December, a contraction of 3.1% on year. The company’s sales during December saw the first on-year fall since June, when it had fallen 6%. Bajaj Auto Ltd sold a total of 297,776 units in December, down 13% from the 298,350 units sold last year in the same period. While the effect of the numbers have been factored in during the trading sessions of Thursday and Friday, the stock-specific sentiment is likely to continue next week also.

Pharma Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.012014 – 10.01.2014

Pharma Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.012014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in

Stocks of major pharmaceutical companies, most of which ended down yesterday, are expected to trade flat with a negative bias next week. Some analysts believe that the stocks may not gain substantially next week on account of profit booking in the pharmaceutical sector, while others say it could happen for lack of any trigger. We would be particularly watching stocks of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd, Lupin Ltd and Aurobindo Pharma Ltd. Ranbaxy and Lupin have very important levels of 480 rupees and 930 rupees, respectively, to cross, failing which they will be seen as negative. The Foreign Investment Promotion Board yesterday said it will mull the foreign direct investment proposals of Lupin and GlaxoSmithKline Pte Ltd on Jan 10.

Following the news, stocks of both these companies gained yesterday. GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd’s stocks could continue their upward run if the board approves its proposal. GSK Pharma’s parent company had recently said it would increase its stake in the Indian arm through an open offer at a price of 3,100 rupees per share. Yesterday, GSK Pharma’s stocks closed at 2,986.15 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. Aurobindo Pharma expecting the company’s profit to be driven by higher margins in US revenues. Stocks of Cipla Ltd are seen as the weakest in the sector with those of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd not far behind. These stocks have been performing in a range and have not shown any signs of outperformance. Sun Pharma’s stock has been trading in a narrow range for the past few months. It should be avoided.

Cement Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

Cement Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in

We expect stocks of major cement companies to be subdued next week, as although the worst is over for the manufacturers, headwinds persist. Although rural demand has picked up, infrastructure spending continues to be a cause for worry. Cement prices are subdued now after rising in the beginning of December. As many companies are keen on keeping prices high, this is not the best time for a price hike. Companies that have come to terms with that have begun concentrating on cost optimisation. Despite the recent recovery in cement prices over the last two months, average cement prices are still marginally down year-on-year. Sales volume too has not picked up materially. Oct-Dec sales volume is expected to rise by a modest 6-7% quarter-on-quarter. Sales volume of all the three large cap companies ACC, Ambuja Cements, and Ultratech Cement would decline 2-3% year-on-year.

We remain cautious on the sector as demand-supply situation remains fragile. We advise investors to focus on companies with improving operational efficiencies and strong balance sheet which should help absorb the negative impacts of any demand disappointments going forward. Cement stocks have outperformed the markets by around 10% over the past three months. Hence, near-term performance could remain range-bound and closely track cement price movement. We continue to prefer UltraTech Cement and Shree Cement over ACC and Ambuja Cements.

Bank Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

Bank Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in
Bank stocks are largely seen trading in a narrow range with a negative bias next week, as cautious investors could prefer stocks of defensive sectors like information technology and pharmaceuticals. The banking stocks which we have been constantly monitoring look vulnerable as Nifty managed to retrace 76.4% of previous down move and touched 6350 whereas Bank Nifty did not even retrace 50% during the same period. Investors would also be cautious ahead of the Index of Industrial Production data for November to be released on Jan 10. However, mid-cap public sector banks are seen trading positively as traders and investors would continue to invest these stocks. Bank of India stocks is positive on the bank’s asset quality improving.

Allahabad Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, Karnataka Bank, and South Indian Bank, among others, may see some buying interest. Stocks of Lakshmi Vilas Bank could see some buying interest as the board of the bank in its meeting held yesterday approved a rights share issue of up to 6.50 bln rupees. Mid-cap PSU banks’ stocks have seen a solid performance in the last few days and this is expected to continue in the coming week as well. Stocks of IndusInd Bank could also see an upside. With focused approach and well defined management strategies, we expected IndusInd Bank to maintain strong growth run-rate going ahead. Lower corporate bond exposure along with higher focus on core-fee income generation offers further impetus to profit growth.

However, increasing concerns of non-performing assets could weigh on stocks of some public sector banks. The Reserve Bank of India has also said in its Financial Stability Report that if the macroeconomic conditions deteriorate further, the gross non-performing asset ratio of banks could rise to up to 7% by March 2015. Expectation that the December inflation number may be lower month-on-month may see a rebound in bank stocks. If this turns true, then it may prompt the Reserve Bank of India to maintain status quo on interest rates. In the previous policy review, the RBI maintained status quo on rates but warned that it will act on off-policy dates. If the expected softening of food inflation does not materialise and translate into a significant reduction in headline inflation in the next round of data releases, or if inflation excluding food and fuel does not fall, the Reserve Bank will act, including on off-policy dates if warranted. The RBI is scheduled to detail its third quarter monetary policy review on Jan 28. The index yesterday ended at 11181.65, down 1.55 points or 0.01% from Thursday and down 2.43% from the previous week.

Metal Stocks Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

www.rupeedesk.in
We see metal stocks moving up next week with preference seen for non-ferrous companies. Investors will eye production data of steel majors like Tata Steel and JSW Steel, due next week. We have a positive outlook on the CNX Metal Index for a mid to long term, and believes the current short-term correction will halt. Sesa Sterlite and Hindalco will be preferred stocks next week. Sesa Sterlite is in the oversold zone.

The stock has been consolidating in the past. Wait for the stock to decline to 125 to initiate long positions. On JSW Steel, although the stock almost touched its 52 week high Thursday still has a positive outlook on it. While we expect a short-term decline, the stock remains a buy-on-dip. The worst seems to be over for Steel Authority of India and expects the company to benefit from an expected demand uptick in the long steel segment in Oct-Mar 2014-15.

RUPEEDESK: Indian Markets Outlook for the week – 06.01.2014 – 10.01.2014

Posted: 04 Jan 2014 02:14 AM PST

www.rupeedesk.in

Benchmark indices will trade in a narrow range next week as investors await cues from companies’ Oct-Dec earnings, which will start with Nifty major Infosys reporting its result on Jan 10. IndusInd Bank will also report its third quarter earnings on Jan 10. Information technology stocks are likely to be the top performers, as they will attract more buying. Some IT scrips may scale lifetime highs, given that some of them are trading very close to their peak levels. Yesterday, the CNX IT Index hit a lifetime high of 9684.00 points. Some market participants expect IT companies to report moderate earnings growth due to the Oct-Dec period being a seasonally weak quarter for the sector due to furloughs and fewer working days. We expect it (Infosys) to revise upwards its revenue growth guidance to at least 12% (9-10% earlier), implying a mere 0.5% QoQ growth in Q4 FY14 to achieve 12% YoY growth. On the domestic economic data front, the Central Statistics Office will detail Index of Industrial Production for November on Jan 10.

Focus on the earnings season is likely to take precedence over the release of economic data. Along with the expected positive momentum in IT stocks, interest-rate sensitive stocks such as banks are likely to see some selling pressure. However, mid-cap public sector banks may fare better as compared with their counterparts in the banking space as they have performed well recently and are likely to rise more given expectation of strong quarterly earnings. The index may move higher than its resistance level, as expectations around Infosys’ earnings build up during the week.
